WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS - (December 10, 2001) - Charles "Chuck" Brandel, longtime friend and General Manager of Nielsen-Massey Vanillas, died December 10, 2001, in Chicago Illinois, following an extensive illness. He was 59.

"We have lost a friend, a mentor, and a bit of ourselves," said Camilla Nielsen, president of Nielsen-Massey Vanillas. "His strength against adversity in the face of this struggle reinforced our feeling here that Chuck Brandel was a special man."

Mr. Brandel joined Nielsen-Massey in 1994, and was responsible for the procurement of the vanilla beans, working closely with vanilla growers, curers and exporters. Mr. Brandel was well known in the flavor industry as a master formulator, and developed custom formulations and applications for Nielsen-Massey. He was a member of FEMA, and had chaired the Vanilla Committee for many years. He was also active in Habitat for Humanity, as a member of its Partners Council.

Before joining Nielsen-Massey, Mr. Brandel served as vice president, vanilla division, for Beck Flavors, and as vice president, vanilla products, for Bush Boake Allen.

Mr. Brandel is survived by his beloved family; wife, Barb; daughter Kathy (Robert) Machak; son Keith (Tina); grandchildren Mallory and Madelyn; and his mother Bernice.
